Quotations drawn from 70 years of interviews provide the majority of the text. Nicholson comments in italics as necessary. Also included are 75 pages of chapter notes and a 40-page discography.
Reminiscing in Tempo comments on many of the over 40 Ellington compositions which have become jazz standards. References to compositions and people are all included in the comprehensive index.
