American Songwriters contains the biographies of over 140 American composers and lyricists of popular music including jazz, Tin Pan Alley, Hollywood film, Broadway musicals, minstrelsy, vaudeville, folk, country and western, and rock. Beyond just biographical information, Ewen includes the performance histories of over 5000 songs discussed in the biographies. On average each biography is three pages long and is in a double column, small type format.
For those interested in the jazz standards, many, if not most of the composers and lyricists you would want to read about are here, perhaps more than in any other collection short of multi-volume reference sets.
David Ewen is a prolific writer on American song with books such as American Songwriters, Great Men of American Popular Song, Popular American Composers from Revolutionary Times to the Present, George Gershwin: His Journey to Greatness, and other titles.
