Martin’s Enjoying Jazz is an excellent introduction to jazz, presenting jazz’s styles and its greatest players. Enjoying Jazz is out of print but is recommended here as an excellent and economical alternative to more modern texts since it is often available used at Amazon.
Henry Martin taught jazz appreciation and jazz harmony at Princeton and is associate editor of Annual Review of Jazz Studies. He is the author of Jazz: The First 100 Years and Charlie Parker and Thematic Improvisation. His “Preludes and Fugues” won the 1998 Barlow Endowment International Composition Competition from a field of 345 entries from 13 countries. Martin is currently a Professor of Music at Rutgers University in Newark, N.J.
