Duke Ellington is portrayed here not only through his own words but through the words of the artists who played with him. Over two dozen musicians recount their experiences with him. There are also accounts of his world tours and public appearances, plus a discography and chronology.
For jazz standards fans and researchers this is the book that tells you briefly about Ellington (24 pages) but more importantly about his musicians. Many of the jazz standards were written or co-written by band members. Many more were written or arranged by Ellington to showcase his musicians’ talents. The general index includes listings by song title.
Stanley Dance (1910-1999) compiled Ellington’s autobiography, Music Is My Mistress, and authored The World of Swing and The World of Count Basie. He was also the book editor for Jazz Times.
