This analysis of the work of George Gershwin includes his concert music and some of his neglected works. It is a chronological study and is illustrated with musical examples, some of which have never before been published. While biographical material is woven through the technical explanations, this book will mainly be of interest to scholars and readers with some musical background. The Music of Gershwin is one of two excellent books that provide in-depth musical analysis on many of the composer’s greatest songs. The other is a collection of essays, The Gershwin Style: New Looks at the Music of George Gershwin, edited by Wayne Schneider. The index includes song titles. Steven E. Gilbert is Professor of Music at California State University at Fresno. He is a part-time music critic for the Fresno Bee and occasional cocktail pianist.
