This is one of the better biographies of the brilliant composer who wrote over two dozen of the best jazz standards. The focus is mainly on his social and career history, enriched by Jablonski’s personal relationship with Ira Gershwin which gave him access to the Gershwin Archive and family photographs. Index includes song titles. More on his music may be found in The Gershwin Style: New Looks at the Music of George Gershwin, edited by Wayne Schneider, and The Music of Gershwin by Steven Gilbert (see the biography section in the JazzStandards.com bookstore.) Edward Jablonski is the author of The Gershwin Years, Harold Arlen: Happy with the Blues, and The Encyclopedia of American Music. His articles have appeared in several major periodicals and in The New York Times. He has served as consultant to several Gershwin television productions.
