This guide to the songs of Tin Pan Alley includes information on their periods, their styles, and their performers. Hischak also includes information on alternate song titles, ASCAP’s and NEA’ Hit Parades, standards from stage and screen plus a select bibliography and index. With regard to study of the jazz standards, The Tin Pan Alley Song Song Encyclopedia is an indispensable reference book, containing over 1200 song abstracts which are, on the average, about 175 words. Most of the jazz standards may be found in this book or one of two others, also by Hischak: The American Musical Theatre Encyclopedia or The American Musical Film Song Encyclopedia.
