All of the lyrics written by Oscar Hammerstein II are contained in this book, edited by his son William. Of particular interest are the author’s personal commentary and the introduction by Stephen Sondheim. Both lyricists shed light on the creative process and enlighten the reader on what comprises a good lyric.
Hammerstein is in good company when it comes to lyricists. Only Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Sammy Cahn, and Gus Kahn are credited with more jazz standards.
William Hammerstein, who passed away in 2001, was a Broadway producer/director and managed the musical interests of his father.
