Scholar and author Philip Furia drew upon the private papers and unpublished autobiography of Johnny Mercer as well as exhaustive interviews with his family, friends and colleagues to uncover the lyricist’s complex personality, including its dark side. Mercer is credited with writing the words to more jazz standards than any other lyricist. At the peak of his career he had a song in the Top Ten every week of the year. Skylark is the Mercer biography to read. It discusses the lyricist’s life and times and contains an analysis of his lyrics by the author. The Index includes people, songs, and shows. There is also a list of books and essays on Mercer. Philip Furia is the author of Irving Berlin: A Life in Song, Ira Gershwin: The Art of the Lyricist, and The Poets of Tin Pan Alley: A History of America's Great Lyricists. He is also Professor of Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina.
