The life and times of songwriter Haven Gillespie are detailed in this book by his nephew, William First, who recreates Tin Pan Alley from the 1920s through WWII. He tells of Gillespie writing “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” on the subway and of the delay in releasing “You Go to My Head” because of a ban on mentioning alcohol in lyrics. This is an entertaining rags to riches story.
Haven Gillespie wrote over 100 songs, two of which have become notable jazz standards, “You Go to My Head” and “Beautiful Love.”
