This is a very colorful, succinctly written biography of pianist/composer, Theolonious Sphere Monk. De Wilde’s prose is irresistible as it should be for such a genius as Monk. The author covers aspects relating to Monk’s career such as the recording scene, the producers, the jazz milieu, Monk’s sidemen, and more.
For jazz standards readers, de Wilde, a musician as well as an author, discusses particular recordings so that you can sit down with the book and your CD’s and learn while you listen. There is no index.
Laurent de Wilde divides his time between Paris and New York. The jazz pianist has recorded six albums of his own, one of which, Open Changes, received the Django Reinhardt Award in 1993. Monk was named best book of the year by the Academie du Jazz and won the Firecracker Alternative Book Award for Music.
