This is the first biography of “Little Jazz,” as trumpeter Roy Eldridge was known. The author, also a trumpeter, knew Eldridge and traces his career through the ‘40s and into the ‘70s. He creates a realistic portrait of a fiery but sensitive musician who raised the bar for other trumpeters with his brilliant improvisational abilities. There is a subject index and an index of selected recordings. John Chilton is the author of Ride, Red, Ride: The Life of Henry "Red" Allen, Wizard of Jazz, Song of the Hawk, Let the Good Times Roll, and two reference works on jazz in the U.S. and in Britain.
