Dorothy Fields was the first female lyricist to gain prominence in a field of endeavor dominated by men. The book elaborates on her career and includes portraits of the many people with whom she worked but fails to delve deeply into her personal life and come up with a portrait of the woman herself. However, it’s an easy read and illustrative of her times. Jazz standards readers will relish the wit and brilliance of her lyrics which are incorporated into the book.
Deborah Grace Winer is a journalist and playwright and the artistic director of the 92nd Street Y’s Centennial Celebration of Dororthy Fields. She is also author of The Night and the Music and co-author of Sing Out, Louise! 150 Stars of the Musical Theatre Remember 50 Years on Broadway.
