The fascinating life and times of composer Harold Arlen are chronicled by noted biographer Edward Jablonski who had access to family documents, memorabilia and photographs. Best known for The Wizard of Oz score, Arlen is well represented with many songs in the top jazz standards, among them “Blues in the Night,” “Ill Wind,” “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” and “A Sleepin’ Bee.” Appendix A is a chronological listing of Arlen’s works, including the lyricists and information on productions (actors, producers, etc.). Appendix B is a list of selected recordings, readily available on CD, which are devoted to his songs. Appendix C details selected films with songs by Arlen. The extensive Index also includes song titles.
Edward Jablonski is the author of Harold Arlen: Happy with the Blues and The Encyclopedia of American Music and co-author of The Gershwin Years: George and Ira. His articles have appeared in major periodicals and in The New York Times. He has served as consultant to several Gershwin television productions.
