Fordin has received high praise for the meticulous research that has gone into this book and for his comprehensive look at American musical theater. He captures the personality of Oscar Hammerstein II and examines his musicals in detail. Hammerstein was a writer, producer and director of Broadway musicals who collaborated with many famous songwriters, winning two Best Original Song Oscars for “The Last Time I Saw Paris” and “It Might As Well Be Spring,” the latter from the film State Fair. His work with Richard Rodgers produced many of Broadway’s most famous shows, Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music among them.
Hugh Fordin was head of casting for David Merrick Productions and executive director at 20th Century Fox Film Corporation. He was involved in the production of M*A*S*H and Hello Dolly, is an award-winning record producer, and the author of MGM’s Greatest Musicals: The Arthur Freed Unit and Jerome Kern: The Man and His Music.
