Razaf is a most interesting subject. The son of a Madagascar prince and the daughter of the American ambassador to that country, he became not only the top black lyricist but one of the top lyricists of his time and moved in both the black and white show business worlds. The author brings to life not only the subject and his times but his contemporaries, Fats Waller, James P. Johnson, Willie “The Lion” Smith, and producer Lew Leslie. There are photographs, a list of Razaf’s songs, a discography, and an index complete with song titles. Barry Singer is the proprietor of Chartwell Booksellers in New York City and a regular contributor to the New Yorker.
