Sudhalter’s book does much to complement Jazz: A History of America’s Music a book by Ken Burns and Geoffrey C. Ward based on Burns’ documentary Jazz which focuses on the role of African Americans in the music. Sudhalter illustrates his discussion of the music with excerpts of scores, and he traces the history of instruments and styles.
In addition to photographs, charts, and extensive notes, there is an index of names and an index of musical titles. A companion CD is available separately.
Richard M. Sudhalter is the biographer of Bix Beiderbecke (Bix: Man and Legend), Hoagy Carmichael (Stardust Melody), and co-producer of You’re the Top: Cole Porter in the 1930s, which includes biographical notes, comments on the music and performers, and a 3-disc set.
