Sudhalter’s book does much to complement Ken Burns’ focus in his documentary Jazz on the role of African Americans in the music. Sudhalter illustrates his discussion of the music with excerpts of scores and traces the history of instruments and styles. In addition to photographs, charts, and extensive notes, there is an index of names and an index of musical titles. A companion CD is available separately. Richard M. Sudhalter is the biographer of Bix Beiderbecke (Bix: The Man and the Legend), Hoagy Carmichael (Stardust Melody: The Life and Music of Hoagy Carmichael), and co-producer of You’re the Top: Cole Porter in the 1930s, which includes biographical notes, comments on the music and performers, and a 3-disc set.
