Vocalist Billie Holiday introduced George Gershwin’s composition to the jazz repertoire in 1948. Her lovely treatment of the tune became a staple of her repertoire, and she performed it at a Carnegie Hall concert in 1956 from which a live recording was released. Another elegant lady of jazz song, Ella Fitzgerald, was recorded live in Rome on her birthday, April 25, 1958, doing an exceptionally moving version of Gershwin’s tune. Undoubtedly one of the most famous recordings of “I Loves You Porgy” is that of trumpeter Miles Davis. Not only is it memorable for his beautiful playing but for the lush arrangement of the talented Gil Evans. The amazing pianist Bill Evans had a magical touch on ballads, and his solo recording for Riverside in 1963 is delightful.
