Biography

Robert Halliday

(1893 - 1975)

Robert Halliday was born in Scotland and came to prominence on the Broadway stage. His first feature role was in the Gershwins’ Tip Toes (1925) with Jeanette MacDonald. But it was his role as the handsome and daring “Red Shadow” in Desert Song (1926) that solidified his stature as a romantic lead. The popular Sigmund Romberg operetta featured his rich baritone on the title song and “One Alone,” sung with his leading lady and real-life wife, Evelyn Herbert.

The couple starred together in another Romberg creation, this one with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, Jr., The New Moon (1928), where they introduced “Wanting You” and “Lover Come Back to Me.” Their last joint appearance on Broadway was in the less successful Princess Charming (1930). They appeared together in the 1935 film, Desert Harmonies, and Halliday returned to Broadway for the successful run of White Horse Inn (1936). He retired from the stage in 1952.
