Music and Lyrics Analysis

Musical analysis of “A Child Is Born”

Original KeyBb major
FormA1 -B -A2 -A3
Tonality Primarily major; brief shift to relative minor during section “B”
Movement Most of the melody is based on a pattern consisting of two upward steps followed by an ascending fourth. Some arpeggiated variation occurs.

Comments     (assumed background)

For a subdued ballad, this piece has a very wide range. The repetitive nature of the melodic line should make it easy for the novice to learn. The harmonic movement from I to the minor “iv” chord, while not unique to this particular tune, is still uncommon. Again, the slow melodic and harmonic rhythm will give the novice an excellent opportunity to explore musical ideas in major and minor tonalities while not making rigorous demands on the beginning player’s abilities.

Sheila Jordan/Harvie Swartz

Songs From Within
2002 MA Recordings 14
Original recording 1989
Jordan’s enigmatic vocals and Swartz’s resonant bass respond to each other with an intimacy and compassion that is strikingly beautiful in this stripped-down version of the song.

Stanley Jordan

Magic Touch
1988 Blue Note 46092
Original recording 1983
The guitar phenom’s debut album closes with a reading that finds Jordan softening his clinical technique to capture the tranquil delicacy of the song.
Joe Lovano

Joyous Encounter
2005 Blue Note 63405
Joined by masters of the genre, tenor saxophonist Lovano pays homage to the old school with this breathy, achingly exquisite rendition of the song that features a heartfelt solo by the composer’s brother Hank Jones on piano.
Toots Thielemans

East Coast West Coast
1994 Private Music 82120
In this very moving interpretation of the song, Thielemans’ harmonica is joined simply by the piano of Herbie Hancock.
Jazz History Notes

In 1976 vocalist Tony Bennett recorded his second album with the marvelous jazz pianist Bill Evans. Their version of Thad Jones’ song is a sensitive rendition by two kindred spirits.

Arguably one of the most recorded pianists in jazz history, Dick Hyman made one of the most interesting recordings of a “Child is Born” for Chiaroscuro Records in 1977. The LP has Hyman performing the tune in the style of some of jazz history’s most important pianists from Scott Joplin to Earl Hines to Cecil Taylor. It is an incredible monument to the ability of Mr. Hyman. (Theme and Variations on “A Child is Born.” Chiaroscuro CR 198. LP, Out of Print).

Trumpeter Jon Faddis, a rising star on the jazz scene in the 1970s and ‘80s, recorded an album with several veterans including composer Thad Jones’ musical partner Mel Lewis on drums. Faddis turns in a superb rendition.
