In 1976 vocalist Tony Bennett recorded
his second album with the marvelous jazz
pianist Bill Evans. Their version of Thad
Jones’ song is a sensitive rendition by
two kindred spirits.
Arguably one of the most recorded pianists
in jazz history, Dick Hyman made one of
the most interesting recordings of a “Child
is Born” for Chiaroscuro Records in 1977.
The LP has Hyman performing the tune in
the style of some of jazz history’s most
important pianists from Scott Joplin to
Earl Hines to Cecil Taylor. It is an incredible
monument to the ability of Mr. Hyman. (Theme
and Variations on “A Child is Born.”
Chiaroscuro CR 198. LP, Out of Print).
Trumpeter Jon Faddis, a rising star on
the jazz scene in the 1970s and ‘80s, recorded
an album with several veterans including
composer Thad Jones’ musical partner Mel
Lewis on drums. Faddis turns in a superb
rendition.
